DYC 2012 Notice of Race



NOTICE OF RACE
(For all DYC Sponsored Race Events)

The Duluth Yacht Club (DYC) will sponsor Wednesday evening and weekend races as listed in the 2012
Race Schedule published in the Leading Edge, and online at the DYC website at
http://duluthyachtclub.com/. Sailing Instructions are published in the Leading Edge and on the DYC website.

1 RULES

1.1    All races will be governed by the rules as defined in the Racing Rules of Sailing for 2009-2012, and by the DYC Sailing Instructions.

1.2    Under Section A of the Racing Rules of Sailing, instructions for protests, hearings, and decisions are modified by use of the ISAF Protest Arbitration procedure, described in the DYC Sailing Instructions.

1.3    For all Spring and Summer Offshore Series races, Rule 52 of the Racing Rules is modified to provide as follows:

52      Manual Power
A boat’s standing rigging, running rigging, spars and movable hull appendages shall be adjusted and operated only by manual power; provided, boats may use electronic auto-helms or auto-pilots.

2 ENTRIES / ELIGIBILITY

2.1    The Yacht must complete the registration form and pay the required fees. To be able to race the yacht must be able to be handicapped using the (PHRF) system as adopted by the Duluth Yacht Club Rating Committee or be in compliance with applicable one-design class rules if racing in a one-design class.

2.2    All yachts must carry adequate liability insurance in full force and effect during racing
which shall include a general liability policy written by a responsible insurance company insuring the owner and any operators against liability for bodily injury.

2.3    At least one individual holding family or individual membership in the Duluth Yacht Club shall be on board a yacht while competing. Visiting yachts must have on board one member in good standing with a recognized yacht club affiliated with US Sailing or ISAF.

3 FEES

3.1    Race fees are specified on the DYC Race Entry Form. Race fees must be paid prior to the first race of the series, unless other arrangements are made with the DYC treasurer. (The DYC Executive Board reserves the right to grant exceptions, after the fact, to requirements for pre-payment of race fees.) Any boat who participates in one or more races prior payment of required race fees will be scored “DNC” for each such race.

4 CLASSES

4.1    The DYC Race Committee will determine the class divisions for the racing season.

4.2    Bermuda Starts will be used for all DYC Spring and Summer Offshore Series races except for the DYC Spring Offshore Series Race #4 (Duluth to Bayfield) scheduled for June 23, 2012, which will be a line start.

5 DATES OF RACING

5.1    The DYC Race Schedule is published in the Leading Edge and is available at the DYC website. The race season begins with a Wednesday non-scored practice race in mid. May. Wednesday races continue weekly through mid September. Weekend races are comprised of a Spring and a Summer Offshore Series, as well as other races as described in the DYC Race Schedule. A summary of the Wednesday buoy races and weekend Offshore Series races follows:

6 SAILING INSTRUCTIONS

6.1    The sailing instructions are available in the DYC Leading Edge and on the DYC website.

7 RACING AREA

7 .1    The race area is Lake Superior and the Duluth-Superior Harbor within approximately 10 miles of the Duluth Shipping Chanel. A race area map is available in DYC Leading Edge and on the DYC website.

8 REGISTRATION

8.1   Registration should include a completed Race Entry From With Insurance Waiver and payment of race fees. Forms are available in the Leading Edge and on the DYC website. Checks should be made out to the Duluth Yacht Club, The Race Entry Form and race fees should be mailed to:

9 PRIZES                      

9.1   Prizes will be awarded which shall not violate the amateur standards of the US Sailing Association or the U.S. Olympic Committee.

10 DISCLAIMER OF LIABILITY

10.1 Competitors participate in the regatta entirely at their own risk. See rule 4, Decision to Race. The organizing authority will not accept any liability for material damage or personal injury or death sustained in conjunction with or prior to, during, or after the regatta.
